- The Go Go's
- Juliana Hatfield
- The New Pornographers
- Belly
- Jellyfish
I would classify all these as power pop. Music that has pop sensibilities but the tempo is a bit faster, the lyrics are grittier, and the bands/artists don't need to a dance troop to pull off a live show. Bands like this have this have always tickled my punk loving brain. I'm adding beabadoobee to the list, after listening to her new full length album "Fake It Flowers".
When beabadoobee starts off "Dye It Red" with the lyrics "Kiss my ass / You don't know jack / And if you say you understand / You don't...", I sat up a little straighter and started paying attention. Meanwhile, she is talking about finding ways to be more comfortable in her own skin while telling the song's antagonist that she's in charge of herself. This one won't see any over the air radio play but holy hell is it good.
Her soft voice sucks you into thinking she is singing lullabyes when she sings more often about saying, "Bye!"
The music gets my head to bob up and down while my shoulders swing to the music. I could listen to album this while getting things done around the house or as part of a mix on any road trip.
Have a listen and let me know what you think. I recommend "Care", "Charlie Brown", "Dye It Red", and "Together" if you want to sample a few tracks. In addition to bandcamp, you can stream the album on Spotify.
